The October 1, 2016 opening celebration of Tseng Kwong Chi: Performing for the Camera included talks and performances by an exciting group of Chicago-based professors, curators, and artists. These five lectures, titled “Five Takes on Tseng Kwong Chi,” showcase an enormous breadth of responses to Tseng’s work.

Janet Dees is Curator at the Block Museum of Art, focusing on global modern and contemporary art. Prior to her appointment at the Block in September 2015, she was curator at SITE Santa Fe.
Jessica Winegar is the Harold H. and Virginia Anderson Chair and Associate Professor of Anthropology at Northwestern University. She is the author of numerous articles on art in/of the Middle East, with a number of recent writings on Egypt’s uprising.
Leonard Suryajaya‘s work explores intricate layers of selfhood in the context of cultural background, sexual preference, intimacy and personal displacement. He received his MFA in Photography from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Joshua Chambers-Letson is Assistant Professor of Performance Studies at Northwestern University, and is the author of A Race So Different: Performance and Law in Asian America, winner of the 2014 Outstanding book Award from the Association of Theatre in Higher Education.
Rashayla Marie Brown, an artist/scholar, manages a living studio practice across an extensive list of cultural production modes. Her work spans camera-based image-making; performance and social engagement/disruption; curation and installation; and theoretical writings.
