We are thrilled to welcome two Northwestern University students as curatorial interns into the museum this summer. As part of the Block Museum of Art internship program, our students are conducting directed research on works of art in the permanent collection, preparing sculpture garden tours, and working with our new collection database. All Block Museum interns take part in a Summer Seminar series in which they meet regularly with museum staff members for discussion and a behind-the-scenes look at museum careers.
Brianna Heath
My name is Brianna Heath and I am from Washington, D.C. I will be starting my second year at Northwestern in the fall studying Art History and German. Living in DC, proximate to the countless Smithsonian Institutions and other public museums, I developed an interest in art and museum work, particularly African American contemporary art and German art. Given that most D.C. museums in the Smithsonian system are free, I spend most of my free time hanging out in different museums and going to events they put on. Some of my favorite D.C. museums include the Hirshhorn, the SAAM, and the Renwick. Regularly visiting these institutions taught me to appreciate free and public art spaces that aim to educate like that of the Block Museum. I am very interested in pursuing a career in curation or other museum work and I’m super excited to be interning at the Block Museum this summer.
Zoe Detweiler
Hi! I’m Zoe Detweiler, and I’m a sophomore here at Northwestern. I study journalism at Medill and art history in Weinberg, and I’m so excited to be working at the Block this summer. I’m from Malibu, California, and have been making and studying art my entire life. I grew up going to LACMA, The Getty, and The Art Institute of Chicago, and some of my other favorite museums include the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Serpentine Galleries in London, and the Warhol in Pittsburg, PA.
I decided to study art history after taking two art history classes my first year at Northwestern. I view art as the best way to see and understand history, which allows us to understand our world today. I’m thrilled to be able to combine my love for writing and art at this internship, and can’t wait to see everything the museum world has to offer. Besides art and journalism, I am also passionate about film and the outdoors.
